The students being recognized were forced to leave the university during World War II before receiving their degrees as part of a relocation program. Material in the exhibit is drawn from a collection of Japanese American Student Council Relocation Records, which are housed in the library's Special Collections & University Archives. Located on the second floor of Knight Library outside the Paulson Reading Room, the exhibit was prepared by University Archivist Heather Briston and Manuscripts Librarian Linda Long. Pacific Northwest Art Annual http://duckhenge.uoregon.edu/calendar/showanitem.php?refid=7756 The Cultural Forum proudly presents the Pacific Northwest Art Annual. This yearly event was created to highlight emerging and established artists from the region who are a pivotal part of the art world. This year, we are excited to be showing the work of over 20 artists ranging from traditional painters to mixed media artists. The show opens May 1, at the Adell McMillan Gallery and will run until June 6, 2008 In 1960, the ERB Memorial Union (EMU) Board at the University of Oregon established an art acquisition program to purchase works for the EMU's permanent art collection in various media done by Pacific Northwest artists. Over the past 40 years, the EMU has purchased approximately 40 pieces on behalf of the U of O student body and is continuing this tradition in 2008. John Piper: Through the Lens http://duckhenge.uoregon.edu/calendar/showanitem.php?refid=7809 John Piper: Through the Lens examines the artist’s use of the camera as a mediating device and his placement of the viewer in the position of voyeur. Exhibited works from the Eye and Camera series consider Piper’s fragmentation of the female form through the combination of photography, collage and silkscreen. His images present the female body as an emblem, removing all individuality and rendering it an object of display. Experimenting with Pop Art techniques, Piper fragments, manipulates and obscures his subject to tantalize and draw in the viewer. A Gaze of Her Own: Women in Japanese Art http://duckhenge.uoregon.edu/calendar/showanitem.php?refid=7810 From earliest times through the present, Japanese culture has realized the equality of men and women in many ways. Women’s voices were included in Japanese literary and religious canons since the myths were first written down in the Kojiki and the first poetry anthology, the Manyoshu. As many of the works in this installation illustrate, women have also served as important subjects in the visual arts, especially for woodblock print artists. Less commonly, though nonetheless importantly, women also on occasion rose to prominence as artists themselves. Indeed, the multi-talented Otagaki Rengetsu, several of whose ceramics are on view, is one of the best known and best loved artists of her generation.
